The students worked on a movie about the Celts and the Romans. The title chosen by one of our young people is The Battle of Castle Hill (a local landmark). The story is about the battle between the last three trbes of Celts (the Brigantes) and the Romans, who were based at Melandra Castle. The script is in Latin and Gaelic, with subtitles in English.
We researched the project by getting in the services of Roman Tours, an organisation attached to Chester Museum. Two 'soldiers' - one a Celt, one a Roman - arrived to give a two-hour talk and demonstration of weaponry. They also discussed the respective way of life and battle tactics of the two civilisations. This included the habit of the Celts of including men, women and children in their fighting forces, the very small children being put into ditches and told to stab at the enemies' feet. This event was greatly enjoyed by the young people and helped a lot with storyboarding and character building.

Club members also researched from books on local and Roman history and from the internet. Ideas were discussed and storyboarded and it was decided to show the Romans, with their engineering and precision battle plans, by using screws and bolts and washers to make their armour. The club members decided to depict the Celts by using as many natural materials as possible - pebbles for bodies and grass for hair to depict their less organised, more natural way of life.

During the autumn 2008 half-term we engaged Aquablue Music to make the musical soundtrack, with our young people creating atmospheric music based on their storyboard. Working with the storyboard Mr Waters helped club members to produce evocative music on drums, with brass instruments and through electronic means.

During our after-school sessions we have discovered a way to apply drawn animation onto our stopframe animation. The experiments with this were done by our young people. It means we can build the figures but draw in showers of arrows, blood etc.

We arranged a trip to an established animation company, Chapman Entertainment.

"This animation was lots of fun and I learned lots of info on the Celts and Romans like that enemies would help each other in the winter" - Jordan
