Hollingworth Histories
is an animation project for young people funded by the Heritage
Lottery Fund. The
young people are pupils of Longdendale
Community Language College. They formed an after-school animation
club with Pat Irwin,
a teacher at the school, and made three
animations on local history themes.

|
The first animation, Cotton,
is available here. The story is an amalgamation of three aspects of the cotton industry - The Slave's Story, The Millworker's Story and The Millowner's Story - all explained and narrated by a cotton weevil. |
 |
| The second animation, The Battle of Castle Hill, is here. The students worked on a
movie about the Celts and the Romans.
The title
chosen by one of our young people is The Battle of
Castle Hill
(a local landmark). The story is about the battle between the last
three tribes of Celts (the Brigantes) and the Romans, who were based at
Melandra Castle. The script is in Latin and Gaelic, with subtitles in
English. |
 |
| The third and last animation - and the most experimental - The Jaggermen, is here.
It is based on the story of the Salt Trail through the Longdendale
valley. Salt was brought from Nantwich and Northwich to Yorkshire and
beyond by drovers with laden packhorses on narrow tracks over the
moors. Part of this trail goes through our school grounds. |
 |
The animations were first shown at a première and awards ceremony (right) at Longdendale Community Language College on Wednesday, 8 July 2009.
Free DVDs of the animations were distributed at Broadbottom Community Centre, Glossop Heritage Centre, Hollingworth Carnival and Tameside Central Library in Ashton-under-Lyne.
